The most anticipated VR game release this year

Not a month goes by without new VR video games being added to the catalog, but some are much more anticipated than others. What games should you not miss? Here is a small selection.

Predator VR

It was announced a few years ago on Steam and PSVR, but still has no release date. That doesn’t stop fans from waiting for it. Pretending to be Schwarzenegger and facing off against aliens in the Amazon jungle deserves some patience. Especially when we know that in addition to the single-player campaign, the game will offer a multiplayer mode and allow you to play as a Predator or a mercenary.

runner

It is a racing and shooting FPS that leads us to escape on motorbikes from pursuers determined to eliminate us. The player will have to increase the performance of his car and his weapons to achieve his goals. The game’s originality comes from its design and soundtrack. Inspired by arcade games and futuristic 80s anime, it’s magical. The 360° view will eventually seduce the player, who, completely immersed in the story, will eventually feel like the hero of Akira.

Resident Evil 4 VR

Capcom loves Resident Evil re-releases and we’re eagerly awaiting the release of RE4 for VR. The particularly successful original game marked a turning point in the saga towards bloody action and survival, and did away with zombies. Exclusive to the Oculus Quest 2, there’s no doubt that this port will be high quality to not let anyone down.

Green Hell VR

Fans of realistic survival games, you probably know this title. This hellish game takes you to the Amazon jungle with a simple laptop and the smallest leech becomes deadly. The VR version promises to be particularly immersive and we’re looking forward to it.

The leading virtual reality headsets on the market

You have decided to discover the best VR video games escape, but what equipment to choose? Before inventory virtual reality headsets the most popular, we’ll see criteria to be taken into account when making a future purchase:

Display quality: Screen type and definition to the eye play an important role in rendering the game and thus the VR experience. OLED screens are considered the best, but RGB LCDs are particularly suitable for VR. They are also found in the latest high-end headsets, so don’t stop at this criterion alone.

Field of vision: For greater realism, it must be as wide as possible.

Reactivity: If there is a delay between your movements and their rendering on the screen, not only will the gaming experience deteriorate, but the risk of motion sickness will increase. Ideally, choose a device with a display frequency greater than or equal to 90 Hz and which reduces latency to less than 20 ms.

Comfort: This is not a parameter that you should neglect, especially if you wear glasses. In order to immerse yourself in the game, you have to forget that you have headphones on. First check the weight and the possibility of adjusting the elements that make it up. The position of the cables can affect the comfort of use, so you can count on it if you are hesitating between two models.

Compatibility with catalogs that interest you: PSVR is exclusive to PlayStation, HTC Vive headsets are limited to games offered by Steam, and Oculus headsets allow you to download titles exclusive to the brand’s catalog. Some are also only available for Oculus Quest or Quest 2.

Energy : If you decide on a separate headset, check its data sheet and especially the processor. If you want to play on PC, check the minimum configurations required to use a VR headset. Generally speaking, a graphics card equivalent or better than an NVIDIA GTX 1060 with the processor that goes with it is required. Also provide at least 8GB of RAM and install Windows 10 if you haven’t already.

Which VR headset to choose?

PlayStation VR

It’s a PlayStation-specific headset, and therefore the only way to get access to PSVR exclusives. It uses console-specific technologies such as PS Move and PS Camera. Comfortable and easy to handle, it offers a very enjoyable VR experience and allows for total immersion. It will set you back €300 with all the equipment, and Sony regularly offers bundles that include popular games. This VR headset is slightly less powerful than its competitors and is the oldest in our selection, but it’s still up to par. A successor is expected, but no release date has yet been announced. An adapter is all you need to make the PSVR compatible with the PS5.

The Oculus Quest 2

It is considered the best on the market and its price of €350 makes it very attractive. As effective as the Oculus Rift, it is an autonomous, light and comfortable headset. Very simple to use, it offers an incomparable wireless gaming pleasure. But since it uses Oculus Link mode, all you need is a USB-C 3.0 cable to turn it into a VR headset for PC. The included controls have been redesigned to prevent accidental presses. The interface is intuitive and provides access to Steam, Oculus catalogs and exclusive Oculus Quest products. The cooling system is efficient and quiet, its speakers are effective, we only criticize it for low autonomy. Its only major drawback is that it requires a Facebook account. If this is an unacceptable parameter for you, the HP Reverb G2 is a solid choice in the range of non-standalone headsets, you will have to pay 710 EUR.

Oculus Rift S

The successor to the Oculus Rift, this is not a technological development. Its manufacturer only wanted to offer a more advanced and comfortable version of its product. The bet is successful, because the Oculus Rift S is the most pleasant headset to use on the market. Although not the most efficient, it is recommended to have a great first experience of fun virtual reality. It is excellent in all important parameters: user experience, ergonomics of the controls, comfort and technology, it lacks only integrated headphones for perfection. The Oculus Rift S is discontinued, but some merchant sites still have it in stock and you can get it second hand. Its introductory price was €349.

HTC Vive

The original HTC Vive was a very capable virtual reality headset, the range that succeeded had to do just as well. The only big downside: the drivers are second to none. At €799, the Cosmos is the cheapest of the range. Some find it less accurate than others in certain very dynamic games, but its comfort is remarkable. It is equipped with two particularly high-quality LCD screens and offers a very pleasant sound performance, which is quite rare.

The Cosmos Elite justifies its €999 price tag by adding external beacons. They enable extremely accurate movement tracking. However, for the same price, Valve sells an overall excellent VR headset accompanied by very high-quality controllers. Note that HTC Vive also offers a line for professionals, which promises great technological advancements.

Samsung Gear VR

It is a virtual reality headset reserved for smartphones, so its use is limited, but its low price – €99 – is attractive. Designed in collaboration with Oculus, it’s comfortable, robust and gives you instant but exclusive access to the designer’s library. Another limitation is that it is only compatible with a few models of Samsung mobile phones. However, it offers a more enjoyable VR experience than other entry-level models and is worth considering. It’s a good way to discover this phenomenon when you’re on a tight budget.
