New ecological bonus: discover the list of eligible electric cars!

The moment of truth has arrived for car companies. On Thursday 14 December, one day ahead of schedule, the government unveiled the list of the first 100% electric vehicles eligible for the new version of the green bonus, which now reserves the help for cars with the best carbon footprint. As revealed Capital, companies submitted hundreds of files on the Ademe platform. Race result: around fifty models appear in this first list, which will be supplemented over time.

Officially, this is not a protectionist measure. The electric vehicle score is based on various ecological criteria : materials used in manufacturing, battery type, factory energy consumption and impact of vehicle delivery. But in reality, this method of calculation puts cars made in Asia at a disadvantage. It is therefore no surprise that the list mainly includes cars made in Europe, while several bestsellers from China will no longer be able to use the environmental bonus from December 15. To avoid cumbersome administrative procedures and to protect our trade secrets, some Chinese brands also decided not to even submit the file on the Ademe platform. This is the case for MG, for example, which will lose the bonus for the MG 4, the sixth best-selling electric model in Europe

The European bestseller keeps its bonus

The new version of the ecological bonus will limit the choice of consumers. But the choice was not that hard. This follows from the information of the Reuters agency, roughly 65% of electric cars sold in France will be able to take advantage of the new bonus. In other words, one model out of three was rejected. Note that government selection is for specific model variants. For example, eight different variants are selected for the BMW iX1. Take a close look at which configurations are eligible for the new bonus on the brand’s website.

At the center of the questions was the fate of Tesla models. Contrary to rumours, the Model Y, the best-selling electric model in Europe in the first half, will retain its environmental bonus, no doubt because the SUV is produced in a gigafactory in Berlin (Germany). On the other hand, the Model 3 imported from China is not on the list. Competitors of the American manufacturer are undoubtedly popping the champagne, because the Model 3 is the second best-selling electric car in Europe.

Renault and Stellantis, apostles made in Europe

As for European players, the Renault and Stellantis groups are positioning their European-made models. Renault didn’t have much hope for the Dacia Spring (made in China), which loses the bonus. On the other hand, the Mégane, Scenic, Twingo and Zoe diamond brands remain eligible. At Stellantis we can find ë-C4, DS 3, Peugeot e208, Fiat 500 and 600, Opel Astra and Corsa, etc.

However, remember that this first list is not definitive. Manufacturers will be able to appeal against Adema’s decision. And highly anticipated vehicles such as the Citroën ë-C3 and Renault 5 are expected to complete the range at launch in 2024.
